The Grow Rack is a home food production system project that occupies a similar physical and energy consumption footprint as many popular home hydroponic kits, but differs in that it uses 100% soil to grow food across 9x 1020 trays plus an 11.25 ft³ tent.
The soil is continuously re-used by mixing with processed kitchen waste, and yields average around 1/2 lb per ft² for leafy greens - much more for things like tomatoes or peppers. Opex is around $600 per year inclusive of the device used to process kitchen waste, all beneficial/preventative microbes, additional soil and propogation supplies - plus the occasional bottle of cal-mag when things get wonky.
Lighting is automated and watering + propogating is 30 minute, twice per-week task. From time to time I employ various passive hydroponic mechanisms for faster growth and/or vacation watering + feeding, with a record of nearly 3 months for larger plants in the tent including carrots, tomatoes, and brussel sprouts.
